A bit of History...
Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend is located in the heart of downtown, just across the street from the Deschutes Historical Museum. The century-old brick building dates back to the early 1900's, when it served as the Bend Amateur Athletic Club, also known as the Old Bend High School Gym. In 1918, it was transformed into a make-shift hospital to treat patients of the Spanish Flu. Since then, it has been passed through various owners, including YMCA, American Legion, Bend School District, and Bend Parks & Recreation District.
Boys & Girls Clubs has been fortunate enough to call the space home to its youth development programs since 1999 after a complete renovation led by Steve Scott and Jim Crowell. Today, the building continues to be a treasured relic of the past. Oregon Encycolpedia describes the ambiance of the facility as, "A blend of Mission and Jacobean styles, distinguished by decorative concrete plaques that depict Native American athletes."
Over the years, various renovations and remodels have helped maintain the safety and functionality of the building while upholding the integrity and character of the original structure. Boys & Girls Clubs is glad to share the space with our community through single-use and recurring rentals. Recently, BGCB's gymnasium has been the venue for community events such as the Bend Film Festival, KPOV's Beatles Sing Along, Amity Creek Elementary School's Annual Auction, and Breathwork with Jon Paul Crimi. BGCB has also hosted graduation ceremonies, family renions, and birthday parties.
